From Separation to Embodied Union: 3D, 4D, & 5D During Individuation, Reconciliation & Unification Phases

There can be a tendency in spiritual circles to talk about 3D (third dimension), 4D (fourth dimension), and 5D (fifth dimension) as if they are places we are trying to get to or escape from. Although recognized as states of consciousness, 3D can become something lower that we need to rise above, while 5D becomes an ideal state that we hope to permanently attain. Most of the time, 4D isn’t recognized at all.
I used to understand and teach these dimensional realities in much more metaphysical terms than I do now, as reflected in my book Free To Be 5D. Those understandings were meaningful to me and to the souls I was serving at the time.
Yet after many more years of emotional healing with parts of myself, soul remembrance with soul aspects, menopause transition, community and relationship endings, deepenings, and beginnings, I experience this map in a much more embodied and human way now. I now feel the movement from 3D to 4D to 5D primarily as a spiral journey of individuation, reconciliation, and unification or IRU.
It is not a ladder of consciousness where one level is better than another or about escaping our humanity in order to become more spiritual.
It is actually about becoming more deeply human and Divine at the same time.
3D: Individuation
Third dimensional consciousness is where we become ‘somebody’ and form our identity.
We enter a human body, a family system, a culture, a gender experience, relationships, schooling, work, and all of the expectations that come with them. We learn what is acceptable and what isn't. We learn what gets us love and what seems to threaten it. We discover how to belong, survive, achieve, attach, protect ourselves, and function in the world.
Our 3D self forms within these 3D Matrix conditions because it needs to. Our ability to adapt in 3D is critical to our survival within it.
Rather than seeing the 3D ego or personas that develop as something we need to transcend, destroy, or rise above (as so many sainthood and sagehood paths have offered), we can appreciate now in this phase of personhood how necessary this 3D self and strategic ego has been. It allowed us to individuate out of Divine Oneness and enter the very particular experience of being human.
And because life inevitably gives us sometimes traumatizing experiences, distinct parts or subpersonalities form around experiences we didn't have the capacity or support to digest at the time.
A teenager may experience rejection, shame, suppression, abandonment, or a lack of belonging and need to find ways to survive it. A Protector develops to help manage life and prevent further hurt. An Inner Critic or Punisher may develop strategies of self-judgment and perfectionism because some part of us believes that being harder on ourselves will somehow keep us safe or loved.
These parts are not evidence that something has gone wrong. They are evidence of our amazing capacity to adapt and the necessity in 3D to form a compartmentalized self to do so.
In this sense, 3D is not something to reject. It gives us the experience of separation necessary to develop an individual self. Yet eventually, for some of us, living primarily from our conditioning and adaptations no longer feels like enough.
Individuation is the beginning point for many, and it is a process that Psychotherapist Carl Jung named and served, yet also has been living in us all along. This is the ground of personhood healing, parts work, trauma healing, shadow work, somatic clearing, and the tender task of separating from conditioning.
Individuation arises as the soul awakens out of unconscious fusion with family, culture, and the 3D matrix, usually through loss, life shifts/changes, injury/illness or other catalyzing experiences. Individuation involves the claiming of one’s authentic essence, distinct from external programming. During individuation, there is a growing awareness of the unconscious personal and collective aspects of the psyche, archetypes, and collective agendas.
It is the phase of claiming “I am me,” of making sacred the task of becoming a distinct, sovereign person whose voice, feelings, and choices are honored. Individuation is not about rejecting others or severing from love, but rather about finding the self who can then enter into love freely, without entanglement, codependent patterns or unconscious personas/shadow expressions.
Taking space from others, setting boundaries, and shifting occupations/geographies becomes an important aspect of individuation, allowing the authentic self to arise.
During individuation through descent, the sense is of becoming fully your own true self, distinct from the persona or social masks and overcoming self-absorption or 3D ego inflation. It is often a painful process, with many layers of grief and despair to experience…as wounds are triggered as portals of growth.
Individuation is the critical foundation that allows the soul to grow into deeper layers of awakening and reconciliation in the body.

4D: Reconciliation
Fourth dimensional consciousness often begins with questioning.
The life we were given starts to feel too small. Relationships that once worked may no longer feel nourishing. Roles and identities begin loosening. Our intuition becomes stronger. We become more sensitive to energy. Spiritual realities may become more tangible to us. We start wondering who we actually are underneath everything we have been conditioned to be.
This can initially feel exhilarating.
There can be a honeymoon period of awakening where everything suddenly seems interconnected, magical, and full of possibility. We may experience synchronicities, altered states of consciousness, powerful spiritual openings, soul mate reunions, and a profound remembrance that reality is much bigger than what we previously believed.
Yet awakening eventually brings us back to ourselves. What we could previously avoid, suppress, transcend, or explain away starts asking to be felt. This is where I feel the deeper invitation of 4D begins.
It is not just about awakening to metaphysical realities. It is about awakening to our own inner reality.
We begin to notice that there isn't just one "I" inside of us. There are different parts with different needs, fears, desires, memories, and ways of responding to life. Rather than saying, "I am unlovable," we may begin to feel, "There is a part of me who feels unlovable."
Rather than, "I can't trust anyone," we become curious about the part of us who cannot trust and why.
Rather than judging ourselves for being triggered, anxious, angry, jealous, controlling, needy, withdrawn, or afraid, we begin asking with genuine curiosity, "Who in me is feeling this, and what are they trying to show me?"
We start being able to notice when soul patterns from other lifetimes are bleeding through and influencing how we are experiencing our current life circumstances and relationships. We can lift the veil on amnesia and access the soul aspects that are living in these realities in a grounded and relational way that allows for deep karmic healing.
That differentiation creates space for relationship.
This is why I now feel reconciliation as such an important word for the 4D phase.
We are reconciling with what was fragmented during our individuation in so many lifetimes. We are turning toward aspects of ourselves that we previously judged, suppressed, bypassed, or simply didn't know were there.
This is not just an inner process either. Our inner reconciliation begins to change our relationships with other people.
As we become more current with ourselves, we become more capable of being current with others. As we develop boundaries with parts of ourselves rather than abandoning them, our outer boundaries become clearer. As our Protector begins to trust us, we don't need other people to protect us from our own vulnerability in the same way. As shame heals, we can reveal ourselves more honestly.
Relationship becomes less about maintaining roles and more about meeting each other.
This is one of the places where my understanding has changed the most over the years through serving in sessions and groups, being in sacred union relationship and in community living.
Spiritual awakening can be profoundly expansive, yet expansion without relationality can become another place to hide. We can understand many things about consciousness, energy, soul history, and the Divine while still struggling to vulnerably reveal ourselves to another person.
For me now, embodiment is deeply relational.
It is revealed in how we love. How we navigate conflict. How we respond when someone doesn't choose us. How we receive goodness. How we hold boundaries. How we express desire. How we repair. How we let go. How we remain connected to ourselves while being deeply connected with another.
These places bring spirituality out of concept and into the heart.

5D: Unification
As reconciliation deepens, something begins to unify. The parts of us do not need to disappear for this to happen, rather they mature.
The Gatekeeper (soul protector) can gradually become a Guardian who offers healthy discernment and boundaries without needing to control our lives.
The Inner Teenager can move out of rebellion, rejection, and the ache to be chosen and into healthy desire, creativity, passion, sexuality, and freedom.
The Inner Critic or Punisher can soften as shame heals, allowing discernment and conscience without punishment.
Our inner feminine and masculine can mature into Queen and King energies that are increasingly capable of holding both sovereignty and relationship.
This is how I currently experience what I would call the 5D Self, although at this point even the word "self" becomes less important.
It is our authentic essence becoming increasingly available to inhabit our humanity.
We become more current with ourselves because there is less undigested emotional material unconsciously determining our choices. We become more transparent because there is less need to maintain a persona. We can feel what is true now rather than automatically reacting from what happened then.
The Divine becomes less something we seek outside ourselves or visit in transcendent states and more something we experience moving through our bodies, hearts, relationships, creativity, sexuality, service, and everyday lives.
This doesn't mean that we permanently arrive somewhere called 5D. I don't experience consciousness that way anymore.
There can be moments of profound unification and Divine embodiment, followed the next day by a reaction that reveals a very young part of us who still needs our love.
That does not mean we have failed or "dropped our vibration." It means another place inside of us and in our soul field has become available for relationship and to be known and felt.
Sometimes a moment of deeper union actually reveals the next place that needs to individuate. Something previously fused becomes distinct enough to be felt, which opens another cycle of reconciliation and eventually a deeper experience of unification.
This is why I experience this movement much more as a spiral than a staircase. We continue moving through individuation, reconciliation, and unification in different areas of our lives. Sometimes all three are happening at once.
And perhaps they need each other. We cannot reconcile what has never been individuated. We cannot truly unify what we have not first differentiated and come into relationship with.
And we cannot embody the Divine by leaving behind the human being who needs our love.
Love,
